Located in the Bavaria region of Germany, Munich is a fantastic city to explore. With cultural traditions nestling alongside modern day glitz and glamour, it is an eclectic city which offers travellers many attractions to explore. And whilst you’ll find the city filled with charm, traditional sights and cuisines, the glimpse of flashy cars and designer boutiques will remind you that Munich remains as modern as city as many.

A great way to travel whilst your in Munich, especially if you want to explore outside of the city, is by using car rental deals. Whilst on some of your holiday you may want to explore on foot, being able to hop in the car and head off to an attraction which is slightly out of the way is ideal. In addition, with many car companies having airport offices, you’ll ensure that you don’t have to drag luggage on public transport and through streets as you make your way to and from hotels.

There are a huge range of beautiful attractions to visit whilst in Munich, including museums, cathedrals, war memorials and markets. With Oktoberfest one of Germany’s largest festivals, no trip to Munich is complete without experiencing some of the cities best food and beer. Built in 1589, the famous Hofbrauhaus brewery is a very popular sight and you’ll be able to see doodles and comments written into the long wooden tables which date to more than a century ago. In addition to a variety of pork roast and veal sausages you’ll be able to indulge in 1-litre steins of Beer to help wash down the fantastic cuisine. Meanwhile, the Victuals Market is also a great place to explore. A farmers market which operates daily and dates from the 19th century, there are a wide range of flowers, pastries, sausages and more to buy.

Whilst Munich has a wide range of cuisine to enjoy, it also has some fantastic architecture. No trip is complete without visiting Marien Square, with its New Town Hall, and the famous Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady. The Cathedral holds up to 20,000 people when full, and you can climb the tower steps offering you breathtaking views across the city and surrounding Bavarian Alps.

Museums are also fantastic in Munich, and there are a number to visit including the Residence Palace of Munich, Deutsches Museum, and the Museums Ensembles. Having once housed the Bavarian monarchs, the Residence Palace has been converted into a museum with 130 rooms of tapestries, furniture and art. The Deutsches Museum meanwhile is home to one of the world’s largest science and technology collections, whilst the Museums Ensembles is a group of three museums, including the Alte Pinakothek, The Neue Pinakothek and The Pinakothek der Moderne, which showcase art and sculpture.

Outside of Munich is the concentration camp of Dachau; a haunting reminder of Nazi Germany. And with the Olympic Stadium of Munich and The English Garden, the cities enormous park, there is plenty of variety for everyone to enjoy no matter who you’re holidaying with.

Munich with its characteristics red roofs perched over white facades is one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. The city is nestled between natural abundance with mountains, lakes and forests surrounding it. So, while you are entrenched in the midst of urban culture, you are never too far away from the loving arms of Mother Nature.

A trip to the city would be incomplete without touring the famed English Gardens that house the Beer Garden which plays host to the Oktoberfest. The vast verdant expanse is the ideal location for a lazy afternoon picnic.

A tour of the Black Forest should not be left out of your itinerary either. The forest that lent its name to the delicious dessert is also the birthplace of the cuckoo clock. Ensconced in the heart of the forested area is another gem, the magic forest. One look at this place and you know where the Grimm brothers got their inspiration for their epic Hansel and Gratel. The forest is a wonderful place for a trek and also boasts of a shop that offers the perfect mementoes to be taken back home.

A tour of the city’s palaces should not be missed if you enjoy architecture. Most of these luxurious structures can be credited to the last king of Germany, King Ludwig, a proponent of absolute monarchy, he built several castles and palaces that stood witness to the sheer opulence with which the blue bloods led their lives. Most notably among his residences are the Schloss Nymphenburg and the Herrenchiemsee.

Munich may not be the capital of Germany but it is no less appealing, the pride of Bavaria and a paradise for beer lovers from across the world, the city is environed by a surprising amount of greenery. Consistently rated as one of the most beautiful cities of Europe, Munich attracts an unprecedented number of people during the famed Oktoberfest.

Since we are on the topic, it would be worthwhile mentioning that Munich is synonymous with a beer experience that will leave you coming back for more. If you enjoy a cool refreshing swig of the frothy elixir in America, wait till you have tasted the German version, served in the festival with the trademark German sausages by the Fräuleins dressed in colorful garb.

The tour of the city should ideally be started at the Mareinplatz; a ‘pedestrian-only’ zone, the area is one of the most popular zones of the city with throngs of tourist frequenting it to make the rounds of the eateries and retail stores that the area houses. Add to this the excitement of street performers displaying their talent in the midst of an enthralled audience and it’s easy to understand why vehicles are not entertained in this crowded area.

From the Marienplatz, you will be able to walk over to the Neues Rathaus; literally translated to the “New City Hall”. The peculiar Neo-Gothic structure is stunning regardless of the odd gargoyles and dragons that stand guard.

For those of you who would like to enjoy the nightlife that the city has to offer but are not sure where to start, simply visit the districts of Schwabing and Münchener Freiheit. Both districts have numerous night clubs and discotheques that will appeal to diverse tastes.

Quite a distance from the train station, and confusing directions, that taking public transportation would be the better option to reach the Easy Palace Hostel in Munich.

Having arrived at night, and no mood to walk, I chose to take the U-Bahn to reach the hostel. Once you get off at the right stop, you should see a McDonalds, and walk down the street parallel to it, until you see the overhang that says Easy Palace Hostel.

Going inside, the smell of paint was pretty strong, and rock music constantly playing. I arrived during a shift change, which meant that reception was closed for 15 minutes. That meant waiting until they reopened the reception, which can be a problem when feeling tired. I did not take kindly to this.

Once checked in, you can take the stairs or an old-fashion elevator, which I did find interesting. Kind of a primitive “beam me up”. It did have the feel of a hotel, as I needed a keycard to get into a room.

The rooms themselves are good, but the lighting is not so good. Each room had their own bathroom. But no lockers in the room. Breakfast is served, but a bit overpriced for an all-you-can-eat, that does not offer much. I would skip it, and try to get it elsewhere.

There are computer terminals for internet access near the entrance. Not free, but you don’t have to use all your time at one session, but can save some for another time.

My stay felt very business-like, with people keeping to themselves. But I had no problem with that, as I was coming close to the end of my trip.

After having stayed at some great hostels on this trip, this one was a letdown. But to be fair, it really is not bad place, but there are better places to stay at in Munich, that are closer to the train station and/or the Marienplatz.

This year seems winter came earlier than usual over there. I tried to pack my staff as light as I can. I was excited to go my dream destinations in Europe, but I am not looking forward to this long haul flight. First leg, Australia to Singapore by Qantas. My first time travel with Qantas, I didn’t expect too much with the economy flight. The food was ok, but lots of us experienced problem with flight entertainment system. I spoke to a couple of cabin attendants that I couldn’t hear anything. They said to reset for me and then disappeared, and problem still there. Later, more people experienced same problem, so they tried to shift us to other seats, only found there’re way too many people and insufficient seat can cater for. They tried to reset a few times, didn’t work. Finally the manager came up to apologize and said they will contact through satellite to reset for us. As a result, we finally be able to enjoy around 3hrs flight entertainment through this 8hr flight. Well, it’s not good start, but better than nothing… At around 9:30pm, we safely landed at Changi airport Singapore.
