Free things to do in Munich

8 July 2010 No Comment

Munich, the city that has been the capital of Bavaria in Germany for centuries, offers many things to do that are absolutely free. No matter whether or not the visitors are keeping to a budget, there are many activities to be had at no cost. Here are some of the top free things to do in Munich.

Visit the Frauenkirche (“Cathedral of Our Lady”). This Catholic church is one of Bavaria’s most beloved Gothic structures with expansive vaulted ceilings and twin domed towers. The Frauenkirche has been a worship site since 1488, although World War II bombings destroyed much of its original facade. The cathedral is open daily, although visits aren’t allowed during worship services. However, visitors are more than welcome to join in worship. Guided tours are held at 2 PM every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and visitors can climb the towers from May through October.

Take a free tour of Munich. Some tour guides work for only tips alone on a walking tour of Munich that stops at famous places such as the Glockenspiel and the Royal Residenz, parts of which are free to view as well. Ask at your hotel about free tours or check out the Munich Tourism Board’s official site before your trip.

Enjoy the countryside. Bavaria is known for its beautiful landscapes, and a short walk outside the city will open up some breathtaking scenery. The walk itself will be invigorating and work off enough calories that you can afford an extra beer – something else for which Munich is famous.

Think outdoors. Most outdoor events are free, but even if a place is closed off for a paying event, such as Oktoberfest, you can still hear the oompah music playing behind the gates.
