Veteran world travelers say that Munich, the heart of Bavaria, has some of Germany’s most historical sights. Here are the top 10 things to do in Munich.

1. Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel. Munich’s music box in its clock tower is one of the world’s most famous, with 32 mechanical moved figures enacting scenes from the city’s history.

2. St. Peter’s Church (“Alter Peter”). The city’s oldest church, St. Peter’s tower offers the best view of Munich for those who can climb its 306 steps.

3. Hofbräuhaus. Get the oompah spirit at this famous beer hall. Don’t be shy; grab a seat as soon as you see one, or the locals will push past you for it.

4. The New Residenz. This former palace of the Bavarian rulers boasts more than 130 splendid rooms. The public can even view the crown jewels in the treasure room.

5. Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Lady). The city’s Catholic cathedral with its Gothic style and twin domes is a favorite Munich landmark.

6. St. Nepomuk’s (Asamkirche). The astounding rococo interior of the private church of the Asam brothers dazzles with its gildings and frescoes.
